There are two distinct analysis areas for HIVIS PRO. First, Dynamic Analysis Services provides for a real-time view of traffic conditions on the highway road network. The Archive Data User Services creates a wealth of insights as to how the highway road network operates today and how it will operate in the future. Dynamic Analysis Services

The massive HIVIS database was created to provide a comprehensive accounting of highway conditions without the need to install expensive roadside traffic monitoring equipment. Over time, the HIVIS database has recorded a in depth diary of traffic conditions sufficient to permit the prediction of traffic conditions. This is where HIVIS PRO comes in!

HIVIS PRO permits traffic conditions to be predicted for a given hour by day of week for the current month. Traffic conditions are predicted in two ways: 1) By speeds alone and 2) What these speeds mean in terms of traffic congestion. This groundbreaking capability permits highway travelers to plan around typical traffic conditions and, perhaps more importantly, avoid areas where traffic conditions are likely to be poor.



Transportation Systems Analysis

The HIVIS PRO database is compliant with national ITS standards for Archive Data User Services (ADUS). Consistent with the national vision for effective leveraging the potential of an ADUS compliant database, HIVIS PRO allows unparalleled insight to be obtained concerning operational characteristics of the highway system. HIVIS PRO can be employed to address macro questions, such regional freight flows and at the same time be used to drill down to micro issues, such as identifying bottlenecks or hidden congestion areas.

  • System Performance Measures

    A number of system performance measures are available. Ask a specific question and the answer, backed up with solid analysis, is likely available. A few examples include:

    • System reliability. Metrics such as congestion and planning indices are readily computed. Can have time of day or seasonal elements;

    • Trip Tables (including activity based ones) for regional traffic models.
  • Probe Based Traffic Monitoring

    Each vehicle is a traffic probe collecting data as it travels throughout the highway network. Unlike existing probe based systems HIVIS requires no infrastructure.   • Unparalleled Geographic Coverage

    HIVIS PRO’s advantage is that it monitors traffic conditions at any location. This is because the participating fleets have established their own wireless communications systems that are geographically independent. HIVIS PRO data and services are available for areas that have no instrumentation and are unlikely to have it in the foreseeable future.

  • Guaranteed Vehicle Data

    Cellular phone based probe services have high start up costs and cannot distinguish if the phone is in a vehicle or not. Pedestrians and motorists are equally monitored as “traffic” information. If the highway is closely situated to a commuter rail system, there is no ability to distinguish between the two.

    Multiple cell phones may be in a single vehicle. An automobile could have three or four cell phones in it. A fully occupied bus could have 50 cell phones. These biases cannot be resolved, because it is impossible to know how many cell phones are in a single vehicle. HIVS provides data for only one vehicle at a time.

  • Distinct Route Information

    While Calmar insures the data flowing from the individual trucks is anonymous, the data is associated with a fabricated ID allowing for data points to be drawn together into unique trips and trip chains. This continued per vehicle relationship enables Calmar to track vehicles as they travel through the transportation network.

  • Scalable Traffic Data Collection

    Ever wonder how much fuel is being expended on a specific highway segment? HIVIS PRO can directly measure fuel economy on highway segments.

    Modern vehicles have sophisticated computers that monitor nearly every aspect of a vehicle’s operation. While Calmar is currently only gathering a handful of variables into HIVIS, the structure is in place to collect any of the over 2000 variables present on the engine data bus. These environmental and performance variables can be combined to create new measures. For example, if the vehicle has its lights on and wipers operating, then it is safe to assume that poor weather is occurring.

    In fact, an emerging interest area lay with “hard brake” reports from commercial vehicles. Hard brakes occur when drivers “slam” on their brakes, a sign that an accident is about to occur or has just been averted.

    Most of this data cannot be collected via traditional data collection schemes or require expensive manual data collection.
